well, after a few weeks of doing rather ...unique installs, it was a sigh of relief to work on what i call level 1 custom install, whcih is about as basic as i do nowadays. though the car is sorta a pain to work on as compared to the Zs and Gs hehe...99 bmw 328i...

goals:

1. good sound quality
2. Full retention of the spare tire and acess to it, this proved to be more of a challenge
3. a hidable stealthy appearance and save as much truck space possible.

so...lets gets started,

upfront is a pioneer 6900 headunit, it has built in USB input for ipod, and the USb cable comes out of the lower cubby.

front stage is a pair of DLS ultiamte UP6 in kick panels...the driverside is angled a little different due to the hood release and the deadpedal...they provide a nice and high stage and center image, trimed in vinyl.

on to the trunk, the trunk proved to be a challend, intially i wanted to do the rear ward facing subs, and then do a front facing amp rack so when you open the seats, the amps are there to tune. but soon this proved that the whole thing would come out a bit too far and making the spare tire removal difficult if not impossible, it also came out a bit too far than i would like...so i did something different in the end fo rhte amps...

here is the normal view

as you can probably guess byt he cover plate on the rear deck, the amps are bolted to the rear deck. waht i did was first drill through the rear deck to hang a piece 1/2" mdf with large bolts, 5 in all, to make sure its solidly against the rear deck, then secured the amps using speedclips to the board so its also solid. infact, i can grab both amps and shake the entire car with out a hint of the amp rack or amps budging

here are two pics of the amps, the best angle i can get lol thought about trimming them, but decided to lea ehtem open to give as much breathing room as i can for them a nine.2 powers the UP6, and a nine2x powers the subs.

and here is the sub exposed, flush mounted in exterior matching green vinyl, two 11kv.3s fire backwards.

so thats it, overall sounds quite good,t he bass is smooth and goes very deep, and of course the fronts are nicely anchored by the UP6.

here are some bgehind the scene pics to show the wiring and what not:

rear deck speakres were removed for venting into the cabin

the two amps bolted to the vinyled mdf:

wiring inb etween the amps to show everything is neatly routed:

powering wiring on the passenger side:

audio wiring ont he driver sdie:

i liad in the trunk doing everyhting upside down for ag ood 3 hours, felt a bit woozy after that lol

and finally, xovers for hte up6 secured to the back of the box, wires neatly routed

thats it

a speedclip is oneof those flat washer types of clips that most speakres come with, you put the screw in one side of the wood, when it comes out the other, this thing spins on, and then you tighten the screws, it sandwiches the wood inbetween so the screws done tear out

Hotness, even your basic triumphs over my best install (of course I don't have the tools to do such great work. Do you have any worries about the amps mounted upside down?

i dont worry about the upside down amps, to be honest, the whole you cant mount an amp upside down is to me, a carry over from old equipment that didnt have very good heat dissipation, or if its a low quality item, or you are purhsing it so hard its clipping. in my stealth floor installs, ED amps do fine with little to no ventitation i think this one will be fine

as for tools, you would be surprised how little tools i have keep in mind i do all jtis out of my two car garage at my house hehe...

i have a table saw from sears, an old and trusty bosch jigsaw, and old and trusty bosch router, plus a relatively small 200 dolalr air comparessor and a air staple gun and air nail gun, thats about it...

overall about 1000 bucks worth of power tools

looks good, real simple but lots of function. its always a pain to get stuff to fit in the trunks of beamers, you made it look good. i think since the air vents are on the sides of the eD amps, its not as bad mounting them upside down.

Nice kicks... are they sealed on the back? Would those work with a clutched car?

Thinking about ideas for my M3.

open in the back with a vent. if i had more budget to work wtih, i could have molded it into the stock kick for a much more integrated look...but 500 bucks for all labor and wiring on the car left me with little choice hehe...

Did you simply replace the rear speaker grills to cover up the holes in the rear deck?

Do you have set rates that you work off of when you do installs like this, or do you just eyeball a car and say "this looks like a pain, i'm going to charge this guy through the nose" or "i've done one of these before, no big deal, ..." type things?
