so just did an install on my first hybrid vehicle. entering into it, i was a bit worried about two things, first being the 660VOLT high voltage drive system that can fry me instantly lol...the second being hte extraordinarily amounts of electromagnetic interference spat out by the EV drive system cuasing noise... as it turns out, one of them was definetly more justified than the other
this was a very simple install by my standards...
goals:
1. good sound quality
2. keep the trunk usable and things hidden
3. work around the hybid system properly
the source starts with a pioneer 5900 UB headunit, installed in the stock location, note the zapco bass control module and the USB calbe for direct ipod control coming out of hte pocket.
i am a bit disappointed at the quality of this metra kit, pretty flimsy if you ask me.
the front stage consists of a pair of DLS ultimate Up6i two way components. i have to say ,the new I is much improved over the old UP6, way better midbass and better tonality...
the mids were installed in the stock door and the door full dampened:
the tweeters were intalled in the stock location on top of the dash, first i made a little baffle matching the stock tweeter flange with matching holes, and then bottom mounted the tweeters using CA glue:
and then mounted them to the stock location using the stock screws, fits perfectly, this is the best pic i can get unfortuantely due to the reflections:
moving on to the trunk, so again, very simple, normally just a full fake floor, nothing in sight, note hte chunck of room taken up by the EV drive system ewhcih had to route wires around:
pop off the center covering grille and here is hwat you see, two zapco i force amps a 4 channel bridged delivering 2x200 watts to the front stage, and a 750 watt x 1 at 2ohm mono amp poewring a single image dynamics IDQ10, there is a suede top panel with routed cutouts for hte pieces:
and finally, a look at below the floor for wiring:
going back to my two main concerns about hte car, it turns out, unless you get really stupid, itwas pretty easy working around the hgih voltage system without frying yourself, but the interference from the car seem to prove true...when hooked up initially, as soon as the EV motor kicked on, a large amount of noise would get in, but after grounded the shield of the simblink signal cables, and grounded the chasis of hte headunit at three different locations, allt he noise was gone...whew
sounds quite good acutally, again, very impressed with the new UP6i, and also really enjoying the zapco Iforce amps, abolsutely love the top mounted controls, whcih is a blessing for guys like me who do stealth installs...
