I've recently downloaded two of Preston Reed's albums, Ladies Night and Metal. Although I haven't had a chance to sit down and listen to the entire album in a calm environment, it's nice mellow background music to have if you're into that kind of music listening. It's definitely a treat to listen with the Grado 325i headphones as the details are a lot more apparent than listening in the car with engine/external noise.

I haven't heard of Preston Reed. I'll have to check it out.
The first thing that came to my mind when I read instrumental in your post was Clapton unplugged!
It's interesting that you don't see much instrumental stuff anymore. I used to think the "unplugged" phase was just a marketing gimmick. But when you thing about it, it really showcases an artists talent if they can hold your attention without all the accompaniment and electronic noise. ...........probably why there aren't any mainstream pop artists that do it anymore..........no talent!

Reed's music is categorized under Jazz but he plays just his acoustic guitar. Buckethead is another guitar instrumentalist but his is with an electric guitar, not my taste too much but it's enjoyable to listen to sometimes in the car.

buckethead of course pro. His soft album - Colma - is one of my favs. Liquid Tension Experiment always an adventure as well, though that is pure prog. Along same lines are most things from Jordan Rudess if you like Liquid tension.

Also I enjoy all 4 seasons of Battlestar Galactica soundtrack, which is pretty kick butt.

Also Ratatat, but that may be too cool for you.
