hey guys,

Since i became affliated with Ed a long time ago, i have always wanted to do an ALL ED car...but due to various reasons, i never had the chance to Finally, the stars aligned this month when a friend of mine, with a daily driver/show car, expressed interest in doing an ALL ED install. I was delighted of course

so lets gets started:

goals:

1. A unique, simple, and clean show design
2. able to be hidden completely and keep full usage of trunk space
3. add some video to the install (it does show afterall)
4. nice sound quality

the car is a 2001 Volvo S40. and here is hwat it looks like:

now BEFORE you get all riled up and flame the graphics, know this, this isnt some mickey mouse vinyl decal, these are AUTHENTIC British Touring Car Championship graphix, straight from the BTCC S40 that was campaigned back in the late 90s. Here is a picture of the race car itself as proof:

also know that the car has a slew of turbo/engine upgrades and definetly has a bit of GO as well

anyway...the system:

headunit: We decided to retain his JVC avx-1 dvd headunit with a small built in screen, it has decent sound quality, and provides video capabiltiy to the minitors. Note the bass controller from the Nine.1 installed int he pocket:

front stage is a pair of EDi 6500 component set, installed in kick panels. We went with a simple durable carpet design because the car does get driven quite a bit.

moving on the trunk...here is what it looks like when the truck mat i made is in place, as you can see, completely hidden, everything usable:

on the trunk lid, as the customer wanted, i molded a rack for two 7" widesreen monitors. the rack flows out and aims downward so its at a reasonable viewing angle when the lid is fully up. note the tiny camera in the middle of the rack so you can see yourself

the rack is wrapped in light grey suede with a dark blue front plate for hte monitors. each monitor is capalble of displaying either the HU's input, or hte cameras:

back to the floor, lift out the carpet mat and here is hwat it looks like. a large mesh grille, with raised VOLVO letters is int he middle, and two dmaller covers with the volvo logo (yes its the male symbol) are on the side. the entire floor is the same light grey suede, with matching dark blue vinyl trim:

now here is osmething kinda neat i thought up, for shows, i want my logo displayed, but i coulpdnt find anywhere in the trunk to put it. So, i built a rack with my logo on it, secured magnets on the back, so it can attach itself to the strut bar at shows, and easily removed by pulling it off here is the back of the rack

HMM...i wonder whats underneath that HUGE grille int he middle? could it be two 16ovs? 19ovs? well...not quite lets slap on my logo rack and take all the covers off

yup, 6 7kv.2 are looking at you. they are sitting in a flaoting baffle in the middle of a curved fiberglass well. the well was painstakingly wrapped in one piece suede, and the rack itself is dark blue vinyl. a Nine.1 and a Nine.2x flank the subs, powering the entire system

there are some lighting as well, though my camera sucks big time, here is one pic of it, there are acutally lightisn below the well shining up, and then leds shining down at it:

overall, sounds very good, the 6500s provide awesome midbass upfront, and the 6 7kv.s easily sound like two 12s

here are some behidn the scene pics of the large amount of wiring and dampening below it all, as well as the intersting subbox/well:

That is gorgeous! I really, really like the way you added your logo to the strut bar like that. A "Simple" solution to what could have been a real PITA.

Any reason no moniters were added inside the cabin?

yeah, unforutnately the first gen s401.9T only came in auto in the US

as far as monitors in the cabin goes...sure...its...budget part of the reason why this was able to go all ED was becuase of the budget, i cant think of another brand out there that i can achieve the same effect and performance while maintaining the budget that this car did they will prolly go in sometime in the future

That makes perfect sense. Especially with the eD amps, there's really nowhere else you can go to get even close. If you do add more later, at least we know we can count on some more pics.

How do the eD 6500's compare to the DLS Iridiums you've used in the last few? Not really a fair comparison I realize as the DLSes are 3-ways and the eDi's are a 2 way but is there a real big difference in the perfomence? I'm guessing it's one of those things where if you can afford the DLS, go for it but if you're on the fence, it probably won't be worth the extra expenditure. Of course, being as how I've never heard the DLS set, that's pure conjecture...

Nicely done though Bing, as always, it's great to see what's coming out of your shop!

well, its not fair to compare the iridiums to the edi, being that the iridums is a 750 dollar range speaker, versus 250 dollar range speaker. its prolly more fair to compare the DLS MS6 with the EDI, since being are 250 dollar range speakres...if thats the case, then i would honestly say the DLS has the edge in midrange and highs smoothness, while the EDI takes it in the midbass department, this is assuming the same set up and the same equipment

No offense but need to work on dash to compensate for the trunk. The trunk kicks ass just need to do more to the interior

maybe make a panel to flush mount the remote knob, cover it in blue material. once you take it apart you will see how simple it can be to flush mount it.

maybe flip the radio put were storage bin is. Can mount a monitor under it.

The pods maybe add some blue to highlight that area. You basically have allot blue in trunk to highlight the toys bring that to the inside.

good point....as far as flushing the remote knob, i thought about it, there is a coin tray thats perfect for it...but the owner didnt want to put it there and loose the tray...but we will see...i ahve flush mounted the knob plenty of times

as for the ehadunit...there is a small issue...the S40 is somehat unique, the aftermarket dash kits, with the pockets, fits horrible in there and looks completely out of place. that pocket you see is the stock volvo replacenet pocket and only fits on the top slot...unless i go major hackage (the headuinit was install before with the pocket)...

what i AM gonna do though, is fiberglass and flush the headunit in the middle of htat spot later on...

to behonest, i know exactly what you mean, i suggested doing some more fancy stuff in the inside...but being that thi si sa daily driver as well...and infact at most shows the doors are closed...this current set up on the inside suffices...for now i am acutally not a huge fan of doing the interior up too much...

another factor of course, is the budget, i even threw those monitors in the back for free...but i cant really throw in too much of anyhting else interms of equipment and labor...hehe

as far as the showness goes, keep in mind this install in the trunk is not really anyhting over the top...and will 99 precent of the time be fully hidden under capet...if there was flowing glass, edge lit plexi all over theplace in the trunk...then that would be a different story...

just my two cents

b

Good ideas if you glass anything you could always do silver instead of blue would blend nicely and not to flashy

I'll be the first to ask... What the hell is up with the "male" symbols?

Other than that, the setup is very nice, great work again sir.
Those 7kv's look impressive in there.
