hi, i'm new here and so far love the info i've found.
i've build boxes for car systems and they've been plenty loud but now i need something for my HT and it needs to be loud and sound good.

first of all, i'm using a Treo 12" SSi sub.
http://www.treoonline.com/infosheets/ssi_subwoofers.pdf

i will be getting a LT.500 to power it and now just need to build a box for everything.
i was thinking about using the eD diy box but am unsure about the port design.
what is the main difference between a square and round port?

ANY help you guys can provide would be great, exp. since i'm new to this.
thank you.

Whats the difference in a "car sub" and a "home theater sub"?

im not sure but there might be some difference in sound quality but i'm not worried about that. these things are just laying around so i want to put them to use.

you might want to be worried about it....and at the very least post the T/s specs so it can be modeled for the home....it will most likly need to ho into a huge box to get any real extension.

It will be fine in that box, stuff it with poly fill and you'll have a generally flat response down towards 20 Hz. Some car audio subwoofers do model and sound weird as they tend to peak in the 30-45 Hz range and it becomes hard to get them to exhibit a nice flat response even in huge enclosures. The DIY kit enclosure == a Good internal volume for that subwoofer for an HT application and adding the acoustic material/polyfill with that driver will most certainly help.

thank you.
right now i'm just thinking about the DIY box but i really want to build my own, especially if i can make one that will make the sub preform better. i'm not really worried about the size so if i have to go bigger then its not a problem.
also, what is the difference between a square port and round port?
thanks again.

A square port is square. A round port is round. Sorry for the dumba$$ answer, but that's about it. As long as the cross-section area and length are the same, there aren't any singificant differences. However, with a rectangular port, you should keep the dimensions no greater than 1:8 (width and height). Towards those higher ratios, you can actually shorten the port slightly vs. a round port. Something about slightly more boundary effects slowing air down a slight bit. If you go greater than 1:8 (e.g. 1:10), those effects are detrimental to port airflow.

thanks for that info. so if i go with a lt500, how should i design the box? i guess i will go with round ports since it will be easier unless someone has a different design. sorry if it sounds like i'm being lazy but i've never built a box thats actually tuned and made to sound good instead of just being loud.

i used a quick calculator on BCAE1.com and this is what i came up with.
H= 24
W=18
D= 13
Tuned to 28Hz
all of this will give me a gross box vol. of 2.375, port length of 8.1", port vol. of .033.

this was all just an idea, please let me know if this would even make a good box.
thank you.

You really won't want that high of a tuning for in an HT application. Keep in mind, HT subwoofer are often asked to reach down below 20 Hz, hence the reason the ported enclosures are generally tuned somewhere in the 20 Hz region or lower. 28 Hz is great for music in the car, not so great when watching War of the Worlds and it is asked to reproduce 15 Hz.

I can design a box for you and you can cut/build it yourself. I modeled a 2 and 2.5 cubic foot box both tuned to 20 hertz, the slightly bigger box gives it a slight boost in the 20-30 hertz region over the 2 CF box. I'd go with the 2.5 CF box. Do you have the 12.22 or 12.44?

Are there any dimension restraints?
