when ever i have made a box, it has always been out of 3/4" mdf or fibreglass. i use normal lepage's wood glue and then pre drill my holes so as not to split the wood and countersink the heads as stated earlier. the screws i use are just black gyproc screws about every 2 inches apart. better safe than sorry. i built a ported box once and wanted to try out the tuning of it, so i only put in a few screws. anyway, cranked it up a bit and blew the end off the box!!! there's pressure in there let me tell ya!!
then use silicone sealant on all inside joints. wether or not it is ported, i do all this. some have said it is overkill but you wouldn't want to do it over again right?
one thing to know about silicone sealants is that you should let it dry for a day because the chemicals released during the curing process has been known to weaken or "melt" rubber surrounds and other parts of the sub.
hope that helps

dont have enough space in the trunk for ported, ill have to go sealed. Solves alot of problems. Im cool with it. 2 13O's sealed is better than a comp 6500 + 2 6000's. Z-lite is helping me out with the dimensions and plan, ill pick up the supplies tomorrow. Pics when i start building!

http://icixsound.com/vb/nationpicture.php?pid=23212
Sides (2 pieces): 12.25 x 11.5
Front/rear (2 pieces): 36.5 x 11.5 with 1 piece having 2 11" holes cutout for the subs.
Top/bottom (2 pieces): 38 x 12.25
Building it should be pretty explanatory, if you have any questions feel free to ask.

heres a question, sorry to threadjack, but im planning on building my new box this weekend, using 3/4 mdf, 1cu ft sealed, downfiring, and i think im gonna try using polyurethane glue (gorilla glue) with all joints having biscuits, no mechanical fasteners. Good idea / bad idea?

thanks again z-lite. ill uild it on sunday with pics. Thanks to everyone here at icix
Last question, I promise everyone lol. Anyone know any good enclosure (mdf) paint? I want to paint it a matte black. Or should I stop being a **** and go carpet? I just think a good paint job would be more elegant and a bit easier.

you could use a flat black paint with a satin clear coat, low sheen and mighty purdy too. If you use a water based paint, seal the wood first with a primer, sand with 220, put a coat of black, sand with 220, another coat of black, then the clear, oh and sand the clear between coats too lol

yeah only thing I've found that regular paint esp flat black soaks in to the wood so prepare to have a whole can dissapear before you stop seeing wood! I found that textured works a lot better. A can of regular paint so the expensive texture isn't wasted. You can use the truckbed stuff, I used a wrinkle type paint that I as quite happy with on my last box.

yeah box finishes are fun, get a rattle can of bedliner and start shooting, or stone look paint, or a 2 tone cracked finish. play with it, if you dont like the finish just carpet over it

$30 box covering... 3 rattlecans of "Duplicolor Truckbed Liner" Stuff works great... very durable provided you use enuf to "build" the surface up (2-3 cans per cubic ft of box volume) Ive used it on the last 10 or so boxes ive built and ive been very pleased with it.

Yeah man, started to get tired of getting that crap on my fingers, so I got a box of latex gloves. What's even worse on your fingers is Great Stuff foam...OMFG, that stuff is pure insanity.
BTW, WD40 wouldn't do any more than turpentine. All it does when you, say, spray it on a squeaky hinge is re-distribute the oil that's already in the hinge. It has a bit of mineral oil in it, but the main job is to just work around the oil in whatever squeaky hinge you're fixing. Neat stuff...
