Just finished cutting out the rectangular hole for the plate amp tonight, wondering what would be some nice durable finishes I could consider putting on it.

I've seen undercoating spray that looked suprisingly nice. Texture hides any imperfections.

Other than that, if your carpentry is on point, stain it dark. MMM.

if it's all mdf, do a nice glossy paint job on it. if it's baltic birch ply, or somthing else with a nice grain, stain it.

Peel and stick vinyl looks pretty good and isn't too hard to put on.

Kind of hard to tell, yeah... some places look like they were coated a little unevenly though. I'd imagine though, if you know how to paint, you could do the undercoating fairly easily.
