I had really good luck with this shoot (mostly because it was done on a tripod and with a remote release) and basically everything is a keeper. I haven't analysed the pictures completely, but they seem quite sharp. I will try to get back out soon and shoot a bit at different apertures to comare the stationary surroundings a bit better.
Oh, I was talking about any lens. I shot some ethereal waterfall shots in Duluth and trying to get into that stuff--without a tripod--was, well, interesting. I did the same, kept aperture locked at f/22 because it was already bright, but also needed to balance-out getting enough ethereal effect while keeping the shutter time short enough. Definitely need to at least get a polarizer when I do that stuff...

on the picture I posted, I created a second layer (copy of the first) and actually used the magic wand to delete the water from the second layer. In this case, It only required selecting about 4 different areas to get it completely deleted. At that point, I applied unsharp mask to the 2nd layer so the water would stay nice and smooth.
eric, personally, I am scared to see how blurry my pics would look if I didn't take them with a tripod. Overall, I haven't been shooting long enough to have a good opinion with sharpness. For now, I am very happy with my pictures, but I'm sure that in a while, I'll look back on them and have all kinds of things to critique, especially once I spring for some really good glass.

Of course, when you stop down your aperture, you start to lose sharpness due to diffraction--but look at your EXIF, you're already at the lowest you can get on your ISO. What else can you do to get the ethereal flowing water? Stop down the lens. That's it.
If I understand their function correctly, wouldn't a ND filter allow you to open up the aperture by however many stops the filter darkens the shot? Of course going from f22 down to the f8 range isn't going to happen, but you could open it up a couple stops for some peace of mind.
Edit: Happy birthday to me $100 American Express gift card = a trip to Ritz to order the 50mm f/1.8 While I'm there, I might give in and get the 55-200 VR too
Fun toy that would be appropriate for only certain kinds of photos though.
Woah, that's very cool... ...that'd definitey be fun, if you could figure out a good stomping ground to play with it...

Well, then...time to research ND filters. My learning curve (probably a dumb way) is knowing enough to do what I want to do, then when I come to a problem I can't overcome, figure out what I need to do to deal with it.
Do the 50mm f/1.8...NOW!! It'll be a low-light god.

i was mistaken, a 4x is only a 2 stop reduction. a 16x would be a 4 stop reduction. You can also stack filters, but I'm sure that at a point, image quality will degrade and you may notice ghosting.

yeah, I have a 4x (2 stop reduction). I haven't played around with it all that much yet. Those water shots were the first time I had it on my camera for an period of time, but I think it may be on a little more often now to dry to learn what it can do for me.
Now that I have the nifty fifty, I can start to play around with my circular polarizer as well. the kit lens has a rotating focus ring, so the CPL was a pain in the *** to use. I'm hoping I'll have some good pics to share soon.
